The Letter Never Sent
Margaret Dawson

I found an old shoe box
Beneath my bed last night
Faded ink in parchment
Sealed up tight
Your name was on the envelope
My hands began to shake
Funny how a memory
Can bend a heart till it breaks
The diner's neon flicker
Where you sat with me
I wore my yellow ribbon
My Sunday shoes so sweet
But the clock just kept on turning
Like the jukebox
Playing low
That's when I should have known
Darling, you were never
Going to show
Oh, the letter never said
The words I'll never know
Did you ever love me or was I just for
Show?
The mailbox stays empty. The phone don't
Make a sound
Just a ghost of your promise
And the tears
I'm crying now
They say you move to Chicago
Caught a trade in the rain
Left behind
Your own life
Even changed your name
But I still hear your laughter
In a song on the radio
Blue keeps playing
But it don't heal me
Or maybe you got lost in the mail
Maybe you got scared
Or maybe angels took it cuz heaven
Couldn't bear
To see a love so tender left drowning in
The snow
Oh, but I'll keep waiting
Even though I know
The letter never sent
The words I'll never know
Did you ever love me or was I just for
Show?
The mailbox stays empty. The phone don't
Make a sound
Just a ghost of your promise
And the tears
I'm crying now
P.S. I loved you
